The World Health Organization defines menopause as permanent cessation of menstruation marking the end of a woman’s reproductive years. It translates in Greek as ‘monthly stop’, and in Japanese as ‘renewal years’, evidencing its sociocultural connotations. But it is not only the language that differs, it is attitudes, symptoms, experiences, support and interventions.
Since 2014 we have been exploring and disentangling the black experience so that we can manage our own symptoms, share ideas and practical solutions and support to others, make a difference to the narratives, thoughts and understandings of our experiences.
It is time that our experiences become more visible, are valued, and included in the mainstream.
